The Developer Ecosystem: Palm vs. iPhone

In a follow-up to an earlier post about the iPhone application ecosystem, this story about Palm has a great quote from a developer that gets to the heart of the matter.

A few years ago, Palm was the only smartphone on the market — so developers focused on the Palm devices.   Not anymore.    It now lacks “the openness of Google’s new Android platform” and the “reach of the iPhone”.   In the most recent quarter, the iPhone sold 7 million units compared to Palm’s 600k.   That is a huge difference in opportunity for an application developer.

To sum it up, a developer is quoted “You can either make it easy for me, or you make sure I reach the largest audience.”   Palm has work to do.
