Success is a Decision and a Running Buddy Can Make it Happen

Recently, my nine-year old daughter ran a 5K race – in the freezing cold rain along a course that was soaked and muddy.   Three months earlier, she decided to join a program called Girls on the Run, designed to encourage young girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running.    She needed a running buddy for the race, so she asked her teacher from last year to run with her – and her teacher ran with her every step of the way – even in the cold rain.

As I cheered my daughter across the finish line, I was reminded of three important lessons about success:

  1. Success is a decision and a commitment.  (She decided three months ago!)
  2. When you announce your intention and commitment, support shows up for you.  (She found a very willing and supportive running buddy.)
  3. The greatest satisfaction comes from the process, the journey, and overcoming obstacles along the way to results. (Not only did she run the race, but she persisted through tough conditions.)

So here’s what she taught me that stormy day – and I think it applies to anyone with a dream, a goal, or a business idea begging to become real:

  • The goal itself is less important than who you become in the process. Who is it that you really want to become?
  • If you are committed to bringing your gifts to the world – and having true impact – then you will need your running buddy along side you. Who are your running buddies?
